USAopoly Games {TOS Review}

Image
During the course of the year we get to review some really fun school curriculum. However, no and again the kids are thrilled and surprised when I tell them we are reviewing a game. They love reviewing and trying new things, but when it's a fun game everyone wants in as soon as the box arrives. For the last month we have been playing two really fun games from  USAopoly . The games we were sent to review were  Wonky - The Crazy Cubes Card Game  and  Tapple - Fast Word Fun For The Whole Family . These games are perfect for family game night, or anytime really. As soon as they arrived the kids were desperate to play. I knew that there would be no hope of going back to our regular school routine until we have played a few rounds of each game. I will talk about them in the order that we played them, basically because it was the order my kids grabbed them out of the box. Wonky  was the first game we played. The box says it's a game for players aged 8+ however, Capt

Random Five - a few days late

Image
1. We spent Friday at the lake, and I actually camped out in our tent. It was the first time in 10 years. I was pretty dosed up on allergy meds and my favorite essential oil allergy blend  Spark Naturals LLP . 2. We had a really cool real life science experience. We had been studying about how insects shed their hard exoskeletons. When we were camping we saw lots of the left over skeletons all over the tree trunks. Captain thought it was really cool to see the evidence of the science we had just discussed that very day. 3. The kids had a great time with their friends jumping into the lake. There was no swim beach but some low rocks that went into the lake where it was very deep and safe to jump. Jam and his friend checked out the area to make sure, and we made sure no one dived etc... The water was colder that it was at the peak of the season but still warm enough to swim. It was probably the last time for the year. 4. The camping adventure was organized by our Church ward. They

YWAM Publishing - Heroes of History {TOS REVIEW}

Image
Boo loves to read and we were offered a choice history book from  YWAM Publishing . It was SO hard to choose. I was going to choose, but found it so difficult I let Boo choose. After doing a little research she decided on one of their  Heroes of History  selection. Then we finally narrowed it down to  Clara Barton - Heroes Under Fire . It was a tough decision - there are SO many amazing people to learn about and I love this collection. If I could afford it I would buy them all. Along with the book we also received a  Unit Study Curriculum Guide  ours came as a CD but I think they normally come as a downloadable file. Clara Barton had quite a remarkable life. Boo really enjoyed telling me about her and life. She talked and talked one afternoon about her sister 'Dolly'. She was very moved by all that she went through. My daughter found how the incidents of her early life molded her into the person she became and why she was known by many as 'The Angel of the Battle

Fascinating Education - Chemistry {TOS REVIEW}

Image
High School is a scary thing. Science and math scare me the most. I was really interested to learn about an online science curriculum called  Fascinating Education . Jam was offered a year's subscription to their website to study either  Fascinating Biology ,  Fascinating Chemistry , and  Fascinating Physics . After researching on the website I was surprised to find that the program recommends starting their program with Fascinating Chemistry , so that's where we started. This program has been a huge success. Jam really likes it. He has been working through the lessons and is currently working through lesson 6. He has worked through the program completely by himself since I set him up with the program and finds it really self explanatory. Jam is used to studying online. His current math and language program are online so it's not something he finds intimidating. However chemistry wasn't the science we thought we would be covering in 9th grade so that was a

Random Five and Captains new Wiggle Seat video review

1. The weather has stayed nice but I think the September storms have finally started. We had a tornado threat but it didn't come any closer than 30 miles. Phew...I hate tornadoes. 2. Jam has started cycling with his Dad at the weekend. It's fun to see them go off together in their Lycra cycling gear. I will have to snap a picture one of these days. Funny thing you would think he would want his sleep as he gets up at 5:15 am every morning for Seminary . Yet up they will get at the crack of dawn on a Saturday to go out. 3. I went to my sisters last weekend and helped her with her garage sale. It was such fun. I took a car load of stuff up to sell and managed to come home with very little. In fact I had some of Captain's clothes on a table and sold the lot for $5 because we wanted to close up for lunch. I've decided it is much more fun doing a garage sale with someone else! 4. Jam is learning by the school of hard knocks as they say... the first week he went ridi

Free 3 Months of Math or $12 for a whole year - Plus a GIVEAWAY - 2 winners

Math is not my favorite subject to teach. My husband on the other hand finds it easy. However, he's at work all day and can't help immediately. So my favorite on-line curriculum is Math. It can be quite pricey and most of us home school families are trying to live on one income so pricey options can sometimes be too much for the budget. Right now you can get a free three month trial  or a 12 months of unlimited worksheets & tests for $12 . This also includes a curriculum e-book with all the lessons in PDF format. The worksheets are all graded and tracked automatically. (I hate grading math papers). Parents/students can review each assignment after it's completed with a step-by-step solution to find their mistakes and correct them. I know I would find this a huge time-saver and at $12 it's a huge deal for home school parents on a budget. If you want to try it for free for 3 months you don't even need to enter your credit card information - which I hate d

ISA Professional Ceramic Flat Iron Hair Straightener {Review}

Image
I don't know about you but I love straight hair. Boo has amazing long brown hair but when it drives naturally it has a slight wave and it doesn't have the really smooth look she likes. I was offered an amazing  ISA Professional Ceramic Flat Iron Hair Straighter  to review and I was really excited. I had only ever had a cheap $20 hair straightener that I picked up at the local sell everything store. So I was really blown away by this product. Seriously this heats up to ultra hot in literally seconds and works amazingly. The hair after using the straightener is smooth and glossy. I am really amazed with this flat iron. It is fast and effective. Believe it or not but it self regulates it's own temperature based on the thickness of your hair. There is no temperature control because it's not necessary - cool or what! * 100% Solid Tourmaline ceramic plates * SMART Automatic Temperature adjustment * Universal Voltage * Fast and safe straightening, curls,

16 years have gone so fast and yet taken forever...

Image
Sixteen years ago today our blue eyed girl returned to live with her Heavenly Father. I think as I write that sentence... has it really been sixteen years. Part of me feels like it was another lifetime ago, that she is a part of me that lives deep in my heart so that I can continue to be 'normal' for her brothers and sister. Part of me feels it was just yesterday that my heart was ripped into, never to be whole until we are reunited. I am a member of  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints  I know that families can be together forever. I know that through the atonement of Jesus Christ all mankind can be saved. I know these things with all my heart and yet I still mourn, I miss, I love. It is because we love that we suffer pain and loss. The Savior suffered all things for us. Today as always I miss her... Random Five Friday

Image
1. I am a member of  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints  and today I took my kids to the Temple. The older ones were able to go in and do some baptisms along with their friends. However you have to be twelve to go in and so Captain stayed with me it was amazing to walk around the grounds.  2. We went to the zoo again. We like to go once a month and since we were in the city it was perfect. 3. The kids favorite thing to do while at the zoo is 'feed the birds' Captain asked the the lady if he could have a grape to feed them. It's more fun and lasts longer than the special liquid they squirt into the plastic tub. The bird on the right is apparently nervous and plucks his feathers out. 4. Captain got to speak to a lot of workers at the zoo today. We saw a lot of birds and he learned a lot about them. 5. We managed another week in the pool. A couple of weeks ago the weather turned cold and the water went down to 65 I was really happy that we had a l
