E is for Elephant Paintings

Image
E is for Elephant Paintings Our zoo has this really fun fundraiser. The Elephants paint pictures - while you watch. It is very fun. Of course we couldn't resist. The zookeeper gives the elephants a couple of treats and then he hands her a paintbrush (already coated with paint.) The elephant swipes the canvas with the brush. If more than one color is used then this is repeated a couple of times. Then you end up with something like this... We have ours in the dining room. It always attracts attention.  There are two kinds of elephants Asian and African. Our zoo has African elephants. The way you can tell the difference between them is by looking at their ears. The African elephant has bigger ears. Their ears also look a little like the continent of Africa. Asian elephants have very small ears. D is for Determination and Dedication

Image
Since I have started this linky of blogging through the alphabet I end up thinking about the next letter all week. This week I was still hadn't thought of anything I wanted to write about until Saturday afternoon. Little J has a 'Superhero' 25 piece puzzle that he got for Christmas. We have worked on it together quite often however he has never completed it on his own. Anyway Saturday he decided that he wanted to complete it all by himself. This was quite an experience to watch. When he first started he was VERY grumpy. He couldn't figure out how the pieces stayed together. mainly because he wanted to pick it up and show me whenever he attached any pieces. Finally I told him if he wanted to complete the puzzle he would have to keep his temper, not get grumpy and relax. I told him that if he wanted me to see how he was progressing he just needed to ask and I would come and look. After that he calmed down and said that he wanted it to be a surprise and he would tell me w...

C is for Children's Books

Image
C is for Children's Books April 2nd was  International Children's Book Day . It is celebrated every year around the birthday of  Hans Christian Anderson . In our house reading is probably one of our favorite things to do. Little J goes to our local library once a week for a 'reading time' program that is specially put on for preschool aged children. They read stories, do crafts, and sometimes 'food' is involved Little J's favorite. April 2 happened to be the day for our library trip. Little J loves this time, it is special as this activity is just for him, something he doesn't have to share with his older siblings. I choose a lot of the books we read during our week but when we go to the library I let Little J loose in the children's area give him a set number and let him choose a few books for himself. These books vary in content but he loves being able to choose some for himself. Well true to form we came back from the library with our b...

B is for Bread Cobs

Image
My mother in law makes the best bread cobs. She gave me the recipe and my family LOVE them. When she visits from England she makes a batch just about every day. However due to health reasons they have not been able to visit us for a while so I have to make them now and again to keep my husband happy. I can't bake them too often as we eat ALL of them even if I double the recipe. I always double because if I am going to the effort to bake it makes sense to make more...If I am sneaky enough I put some in the freezer but they are normally all eaten before I can do that. Here is the recipe. Nana's Bread Cobs 1 1/2 lbs flour (4 1/4 cups) 1 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoon sugar 15 oz water and milk (warmed) 1 tablespoon oil 5 teaspoon dried yeast 1. Mix together - preheat oven to 450 degrees. 2. Knead well (I use my kitchen-aid it is the heavy duty one and I can just manage a double mixture) 3. Cover with cling film / bag and allow to rise till doubled in size. (Approx ...
