Lego Fest 2016 Kansas City

Image
If you ever get the chance to go to a Lego Fest it is SO much fun. I was able to go to the Kansas City fest a few months ago and we had a blast. I had two tickets to give away on my blog - I know that the winners had a great time too as I made plans to meet them their. We went on the Friday night and it was a lot quieter than I thought so wait times weren't too bad. I heard the Saturday was a lot busier. My kids met some of the Lego MasterBuilders and it was truly a fun experience! Make sure to check them out! Captain talked about it all weekend as his Dad wasn't able to come with us. Even Boo got in to it. One recommendation though if you are noise sensitive is to take ear plugs - It fun but man oh man it's noisy! All those kids and all that Lego! A little Thunder - Fundraiser

Image
I have a friend that started an amazing 'not for profit' company. The name is  A Little Thunder  (facebook) you can check out their website  here.   They provide comfort boxes to families who lose children. Having lost two children myself, I can understand the comfort that these boxes bring. The items bring a little comfort and may fulfil a need, but the thought that someone cares or is thinking about you is paramount. When a family is going through a loss like this they feel very alone. Although you know that others have suffered in the same or similar way, it also feels like no one knows what you are going through. I remember feeling like I had been transported out of my life and was floating. Nothing seemed real for quite a while, and then you realize that its not a bad dream, and you won't wake up to everything being OK. The family started A Little Thunder in honor of their son Issac you can read his story  here. I lost my son Samuel when we lived in Wales. W

Heirloom Audio Productions - The Cat of Bubastes {TOS REVIEW}

Image
One of my absolute favorite things we do is listen to audio books in the car. Since being on the review crew we have had the amazing opportunity to listen to some awesome dramatized audio productions by  Heirloom Audio Productions . Everyone was seriously excited when we heard that we were going to be able to review their latest production  The Cat of Bubastes . The Cat of Bubastes has a huge significance to us as it was the very first G A Henty book we ever read. Well of course read is used very loosely as we actually didn't read it. We listened to the full audio book. Our love of G A Henty books was born. Since we had all listened to the full audio book version the kids were excited to see what the amazing team at Heirloom Audio Productions had done with this two hour movie length dramatized version. We were not disappointed. We saved for one of our long piano days. The minute we put it in the CD player in the car, the kids were mesmerized. The story runs along

Five...yes I have five.

There is a question that people always ask that I hate answering truthfully. I always try to be honest so why do I sometimes lie when I answer this question. The main reason my answer changes is because it depends on who asks it. So what's the question I hear you ask... It's a really simple one. I'm sure you are asked the same question often, just like I am... "How many children do you have?" So what's the answer you may ask, and why does my answer change. The answer is 5 I have 5 children. This is where it gets complicated. You see if you don't know me you see my three amazing kids. You see my oldest son, my middle daughter, and my cutie pie - growing to quickly baby. What you don't see is that my oldest son is really #3 that my only daughter had an older sister, that my three youngest had an older brother. This is what you don't see. Everytime I am asked that question the number 5 pops into my mind. However, then I stop and think...do

Manga Based Science Books!

Image
My kids love reading and learn SO much from it. It's fun to see what topics they learn about because they want to learn - it's amazing. When I heard there were comic books that could help my children learn science, I was skeptical. But I'm being won over, because I've discovered the magic of Manga learning tools! What is Manga? It's a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels, typically aimed at adults as well as children. Why does it matter? And what does it have to do with learning? I've discovered this tremendous resource for teaching kids science and all about the human body. Rather than a dry text and diagram textbook, concepts are covered in a story-based format that's also visual, so learners of all kinds have more to glom onto, and it's easier to recall. Sort of like our trusted and true pal Ms. Frizzle of the Magic School Bus , but for a slightly older children depending on the book. Last but certainly not least - it

The Afters album, Live on Forever! - Giveaway

Image
I like up lifting music and I was recently sent a copy of the The Afters album "Live On Forever" if you haven't heard of them then catch up by reading their bio below! The Afters - Live on Forever Bio: It’s easy to assume stories of trial and triumph are just for the Bible or the history books. But miracles still happen, even when adversity hits hardest. Just ask Josh Havens, guitarist and lead vocalist of The Afters. He relates how the band’s latest effort, Live on Forever , began during a season of tragedy. Just as the band regrouped to record, Havens witnessed the wife of a close friend contract cancer. Drummer Jordan Mohilowski (who produced the new album) had a brief health scare, and a close companion in his church—part of the worship team—was hit and killed by an impaired driver. She was a young woman, Havens says, who had unlimited potential. But Live on Forever –the band’s fifth with the Fair Trade label-still took shape as a celebration of f

Help Teaching Pro Subscription - For Elementary Ages {TOS REVIEW}

Image
No you aren't suffering from Deja vu this is another review for the  Help Teaching - Pro Subscription . My last review can be found  here.  Last time I reviewed HelpTeaching.com  I was focused on the older age group grade 8-12. This time Captain and I have been using some of the elementary grade resources. I really like this website. It's not a curriculum but a great resource to 'help you teach'. I have really used this website for every part of Captains work whether it's writing, math, science, or even just a spur of the moment test about something we had been talking about one afternoon. One day I mentioned to Captain about abbreviating the months of the year. He thought that was really cool - well it's less writing right so of course that appeals to most people, children and adults alike. So I was looking around on HelpTeaching.com  I saw a little test on that exact subject! SCORE! I wondered how much he had paid attention. I mentioned to him I had a lit

Homemade Yogurt

Image
I recently got an Instant Pot! If you haven't heard of them stick around around I will be talking about mine a lot in the near future I'm sure! One of our new favorite things is homemade yogurt with homemade strawberry compote. We make them up in little jars so that they are easy to grab and go! Captain loves them!

Apologia Educational Ministries - Exploring Creation with Astronomy, 2nd Edition {TOS Review}

Image
We love Apologia Educational Ministries homeschool curriculum for science . Captain has had a great time working through  Exploring Creation with Astronomy 2nd Edition . He recognized some of the material as I had the 1st edition that I used with Jam and Boo. To facilitate this review I was sent a lot of products to use with Captain. He was super excited when the box arrived! We received; The 2nd Edition Student Text  Note booking Journal Junior Note booking Journal Audio CD Like I mentioned earlier I had previously used the 1st edition text. However, the note booking journals and audio CD was new to me as we used lap books previously and I have never had the audio CD.  The first thing we had to decide was which note booking journal we were going to use. I wanted Captain to be on board right from the beginning so I let him choose. I explained that one of them was called a junior notebook and the other was the regular one. He took both notebooks to the table and studi
