Odyssey Adventure Club - available in the APP STORE

Image
We have been member of the Odyssey Adventure Club for a couple of months. Captain really likes the videos and I can feel good about the content. Because we were quite new to the website we went back to season one and have been really enjoying the audios. Captain loves to listen when he is working on his program for his eye issues. Captain was a little disappointed that there wasn't a kindle app. However, I let him download the Android App to my phone. It's really handy as you can download up to five episodes so that it doesn't take all my data when we are offline. I prefer him listening to audios in the car as then he can still look around and see where we are going. Which is perfect when we are traveling to new places as you can learn a lot of Geography and other things just by watching the scenery.    Disclosure of Material Connection: Some of the links in the post above are “affiliate links.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I

SimplyFun Archery Dice {TOS REVIEW}

Image
I'm reviewing  Archery Dice , one of four of   SimplyFun  new releases. We love games and so we were really excited when this arrived. My kids are funny lately whenever a package arrives on the doorstep they all act like it's Christmas morning. As usual if the package contains a game everything is put on hold until we have played it not once, or twice, but normally five or six times. When this game arrived it was slightly different because there was only Captain and I at home so there wasn't quite as much noise - we still had to play it numerous times though before we could get back on with our day. Until of course the older kids came home and found out we had a new game and it all started again. Archery Dice  is a mixture of skill and luck, mainly luck for me but I can see how you could get skilled at it. It was a perfect game for Captain who with his  Amblyopia  really benefits from any hand eye coordination games. The back of the box says that

HelpTeaching.com Pro Plan {Schoolhouse Teachers Review}

Image
I have been using the  Pro Plan  subscription from  HelpTeaching.com  to help my older two children with their middle school and high school subjects for the last couple of months. This is a really helpful website (no pun intended). There are so many worksheets, tests, links to videos etc it's quite amazing. In fact I feel like I have only just started to scratch the surface. For the review period I have been focusing on grades 8-12 although if you take a look you will find that there is material on there for all grades K-12. Boo has been working on things to help her with her literature and English studies. She recently finished the book 'Animal Farm' and I was able to find a test on the website that she could do. It asked her questions about the text and made her think into the meaning behind the story. The grammar exercises are really useful too. If you have the Pro Plan the grammar section has unlocked worksheets that are divided by grade from K-12. I assi

I have some huge LEGO fans in my house! So much so that my husband had his dad bring his childhood LEGO collection from England a few years ago. In fact I don't think there has been a birthday or Christmas that didn't include at least one, more than often more new LEGO set joining our collection.  When I heard that LEGO KidsFest was coming to Kansas City I was really excited! My kids are excited and we will have a great time I am sure. We will be there on Friday - opening night and Captain is already counting down the dates. Scripture of the Week Isaiah 58: 6-7

Image
It's time to memorize a new scripture. Jam found the last one a little harder. He said that it didn't rhyme or have any rhythm to it. When it's like that he finds it a little more difficult. I have been so proud of the effort he is making to study these scriptures. As usual we have been writing them on the glass door in the kitchen and it really helps us all focus on that scripture for the time it takes Jam to memorize it. We don't all consciously work on memorizing but we end up feeling connected to it by the end of the week. This weeks scripture gives us a lot to think about.   Disclosure of Material Connection: Some of the links in the post above are “affiliate links.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission. HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections {Schoolhouse Review Crew}

Image
With this being a presidential election year, and this being my first time to VOTE (can you tell I am excited), I jumped at the chance to review HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S Elections from Home School in the Woods. I received this as a downloadable product via email. I worked on this with Boo and we thoroughly enjoyed it. When you receive the download it comes in separate folders. Some as audio, some as a printable book, and some as PDFs that need to be printed to form the lap pak. The first thing I did to prepare for this lap pak is print out all the relevant PDFs. There is a handy information sheet that tells you exactly what you need to print, how many to print and what kind/color of paper to print it on. This takes quite a while and so I like to get it all printed at once and then stored in a file folder until we are ready to work on each section. Boo really liked having it organized like this as she hates having to wait for things to be prin

Math Mammoth is now on Educents

Image
Math is not my thing. Seriously I love music, reading, history etc ... but math NO I hate it. Luckily for me I married someone who loves it. To my husband it just makes sense. Everything is clean cut and either right or wrong, something that frustrates him about my favorite subjects, where everything is more subjective. When we first home-schooling I came across Math Mammoth and I really liked it. My older kids have moved on to other curriculum but Captain uses it and is working his way through 2nd grade. I read it with him sometimes and sometimes he reads it and works through it by himself. What is Math Mammoth? Math Mammoth is a collection of digital lessons and worksheets focused on developing different math skills for children of all ages. You can find lessons that range from basic addition and subtraction to more advanced subjects like statistics and linear equations. My kid finds the no-nonsense, straightforwardness of this book more to his liking." - Tammy L. vi

Field Trip Friday - Rock Climbing

Image
Our local University has an awesome rock wall that is open to the public and they charge the amazing price of $3 per climber. My kids love going, and I like the price. Last Friday our planned field trip fell through and has been moved to March. However, my kids really wanted to go somewhere. So I suggested to our field trip group that we make a spontaneous trip to the rock-wall. It can sometime get busy with college kids so normally I call ahead and they open an hour earlier for us - at no extra charge. It's a really great facility. All of the workers there are students and have always been polite and helpful to my kids. After a brief talk about the rules and regulations of the wall, the kids get geared up. All harnesses and shoes are included in the $3 fee so as you can see it's the perfect place to learn a new skill, and burn up some energy. We have been going there for the last five years and the kids love it every time. We had a lot of our home-school friends join us
