Review and Giveaway Magic Desktop Parental Software

Image
We spend a lot of time on the computer. My husband works in IT so he's very pro technology. I work online and the kids have quite a few online classes. They only was we can make this work smoothly is for everyone to have their own laptop. Until last year Captain used to share mine, but because it makes sense for him to utilize online courses and programs while I work it became necessary for him to get his own laptop as well. This is all great as technology is awesome and is really useful. However, I didn't want the kids to have 'free reign' over everything on the Internet. We have tried numerous programs for the computer but so far none of them seemed to be very user friendly. I heard about  Magic Desktop  and I was intrigued straight away. The company gave me a family license so I could try it out and tell you all about it! This program works whether you have one shared computer or laptop (single license) or if you have multiple computers like we do (family pac

Second Scripture of the Week 11/18/2015

Image
Well he's done it again, Jam is completely blowing me away with his dedication this year. He's really working hard at memorizing his  Seminary Scriptures  and passed off another one yesterday. So we have a new scripture written on our glass door in the kitchen. Since there is no Seminary next week this one may be up a little longer. However, there is also a good chance he could memorize this by Friday! Ponderizing Scripture of the Week November 9th 2015

Image
I was a little slow posting our scripture of the week. We started this one on Monday as it took Jam a little longer to memorize the 10 commandments for Seminary. However he beat me to it this week. I was preparing this post and he looked over my shoulder and said that I was behind because he passed this one off in Seminary this morning. That kid and his dedication amazes me! However I'm sharing it anyway because I worked hard on this one - isn't the picture fun! U.S. History Detective, Book 1 The Critical Thinking Co. {TOS REVIEW}

Image
Jam wanted to study American History this year and so we were really pleased when we were offered a review from  The Critical Thinking Co.  and it was their  U.S. History Detective Part 1 .  we received the physical book however, it is also available as a download for windows computers only. The course itself can be used as a stand alone curriculum or as a supplement. Since Jam was already taking another American History course before we had the chance to try this one we decided that the two together would give him a comprehensive year of study. This history book is not a straight forward text. There are critical thinking aspects to the curriculum which I love, and the questions really make the student think. U.S. Detective Book 1  starts at the time of the first European Explorers (think the time of Columbus) to the Reconstructive Era following the Civil War. This actually fit perfectly with some other work Jam was doing and he really enjoyed reading about the time period

Ann McCallum Books {TOS REVIEW}

Image
We love books and so when I was offered one of  Ann McCallum Books  to review I thought it would be fun. All of the kids love new books but since Captain has just really started reading more and more I decided to choose a title leaning towards him. We were offered the book  Rabbits Rabbits Everywhere A Fibonacci Tale . Who is Ann McCallum Ann McCallum is a math teacher and an award-winning author of children's books there are five being reviewed by the crew. Eat Your Math Homework Eat Your Science Homework Eat Your U.S. History Homework Rabbits Rabbits Everywhere  (This is the one we received). Beanstalk:The Measure of a Giant (A Math Adventure) The book we read is a fun story about rabbits. Well that's what Boo and Captain thought the first time Boo read it to him. She loves reading to Captain and this wasn't an exception. However, this is a story about a little more than multiplying rabbits. It's actually about the math concept Fibonacci told in a &#

The Brinkman Adventure Season 3 {TOS Review}

Image
I have been on the  Schoolhouse Review Crew  for a few years and every now and again I miss out on a review that sounded amazing. Well last year the review crew reviewed some of the stories from  Brinkman Adventures  so this year when the opportunity came up to review  The Brinkman Adventure - Season 3  I jumped at the chance. I had never listened to any of the previous episodes but it was easy to figure out who was who and what was happening. The Brinkman's are a real life family, well there name's have been changed but the voices of the actors and actresses play themselves. So although it's not their real names it is the real person - it's that neat. A lot of the stories really happened, although some of course are dramatized for the stories, most are based on real events. There are a lot of stories from missionaries from around the world, and although they are a different religion than I am it is amazing to hear stories based on the faith of Jesus Christ.

Standard Deviants Accelerate - SDA {TOS Review}

Image
Jam and I have been using  Standard Deviants Accelerate . We love being able to use online resources in our homeschool and so It was great being able to try out this program. We were given access to all of their Home-school Courses  courses for the period of one year. The courses available are for grades 3-12 and cover a huge variety of subjects. Each subject has enough material for a year's worth of supplemental study. The courses that we received access to are; Arithmetic (Grades 3+) Fundamental Math (Grades 4+) Earth Science (Grades 6+) Nutrition (Grades 6+) Biology (Grades 7+) Algebra (Grades 7+) Chemistry (Grades 9+) English Comp (Grades 9+) U. S. History (grades 9+) AP Biology (grades 11+) AP Chemistry (grades 11+) AP U. S. Gov. & Politics (grades 11+) AP Eng. Composition (grades 11+) Jam was especially interested in U.S. History and Chemistry so that is what we focused on. It's really practical to use as he could access the courses on his laptop

Random Five - A couple of days late.

1. We had a great time this last week. We made our Halloween milk-jug skeleton. That you can see below. 2. We don't do a lot of decorating for Halloween but we made one of these skeletons last year and Captain really wanted to do another. So now we have twins :) 3. Halloween day was spent at a swim meet. It was a quiet one which was great. The best thing though was that warm-ups for Boo didn't start until 8:50 AM which meant we didn't have to leave our house until 7 AM. So much better than the last one when we left at 4:50 AM. 4. We went to my sisters for the evening of Halloween as she lives near the pool we swam at. The kids had a blast. Jam didn't dress up this year - for the first time - and so he was in charge of taking Captain Trick or Treating around the neighborhood. It was the first time I let the kids go without me. 5. THE ROYALS WON - Need I say more!!! Disclosure of Material Connection: Some of the links in the post above are “affiliate lin
