WorthyKids/Ideals - The Book Series - The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls {TOS Review}

Image
Captain loves to read. I have said this many times. So any chance we get to read a new book, especially one that teaches we jump at the chance. We were recently introduced to a new book series by WorthyKids/Ideals called The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls . These books were a fun and easy read for Captain. He's eight but reads at a very high level. Sometimes that means he's tempted to skip over younger level books. However, he realized that sometimes it's fun to sit down and read a book in a couple of hours. Which is just what he did with these books. In fact he enjoyed them so much he read them both in one day!   These books are a time travel adventure series. We have similar books on our book shelves related to history, or just fun exciting adventures. These however, are the first set that transport the kids back in time to exciting adventures in Bible history. We received the first two books in The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls series and the first thing

Do you take snow days or sun days!

Image
Last winter, Captain was a little put out when our local school district had to close for a couple of days because of snow. I tried to explain that they closed because the children would not have been safe going to school. He asked why we didn't have snow days. I asked him if the snow made it difficult to get to the table with his school books. He laughed and said of course not. So there you have it! I said, that's why we don't have snow days. I don't think he was convinced but we continued with school anyway. We have recently moved, this summer has been a lot cooler than our previous summers. In fact my kids have asked all summer...when is summer coming. So last week out of the blue...at the end of September, we had a super hot day. Well hot for here anyway. So as a complete surprise I announced that we were going to take a SUN day! Yep that's right :) my kids were super excited especially Captain. I explained that since we don't take snow days we can take th

Heirloom Audio Productions - Captain Bailey's Heir {TOS REVIEW}

Image
We absolutely love all of the audio CD's we have from  Heirloom Audio Productions . The latest did not change that opinion  Captains Bailey's Heir  was a fantastic audio book and we all loved it. As soon as we hit play my kids comment how much they love Brian Blessed as G A Henty! If you haven't listened to any of these adventures yet you are missing out! They are awesome for car journeys. The story starts in England the hero of the adventure Frank is a great example of character. He lives with his Uncle, cousin and another girl that in the story is called his cousin - they are not related. At the beginning of the story Frank saves a dog from drowning in the ice. The dog belongs to a boy who can't walk and they become friends. He even finds the mother of the boy a job in his uncles household. We also learn at the beginning of the story that the Uncle lost touch with his daughter many years before due to a disagreement. Although the uncle tries to be happy the

Apple Picking - Field Trip

Image
This week we went on a field trip with a home school Facebook group that we joined recently. I have never been apple picking. Normally I just opt out, go to the orchard shop and buy by the bag. The the kids, especially Captain wanted to pick. It was an unusually warm September day. One where I should have definitely worn shorts but opted for jeans instead! The kids loved it even though it really didn't take very long. We even found some pears to pick. Captain has already eaten quite a few. After we finished picking apples we noticed they had a super small corn maze. But it was still a corn maze and Captain was super excited to run through it...like all boys are. I sent Boo and Jam off to explore with him while I sat in the shade - thinking about WHY I hadn't worn shorts! :)   Disclosure of Material Connection: Some of the links in the post above are “affiliate links.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commissi

Imagine. . .The Great Flood by Matt Koceich {TOS REVIEW}

Image
Captain loves to read. In fact just yesterday I took him to our main city library to check out about ten books. We have a small library near us but he prefers the downtown one as it has a bigger selection. I sometimes give in and take him their and pay the parking...all in the love of books right! We were offered a new biblical fiction book Imagine...The Great Flood by Matt Koceich  from  Barbour Publishing . Captain reads at a high level and so had no problem reading this book by himself. In fact he read it one rainy day this summer - yes, that's right in one day! I asked him a few questions about the book and wrote down his responses - Book Summary by Captain - Corey is upset because his Dad told him they were moving. He's very sad scared. He goes to the park with his Mom and throws a ball to his dog and the ball lands in the forest. The dog runs after the ball and after going into the woods starts barking. Corey runs into the woods after his dog when he bumps h

Let's Go Geography {TOS Review}

Image
Captain and I have been working through the weekly lessons from a great  homeschool geography curriculum  from  Let's Go Geography . It's been really simple to implement into our routine and is all prepared for me I just have to print or click depending on the activity. The program is designed in weekly geography lessons and perfect for homeschool students. These can be broken down into daily sections probably lasting 5-10 minutes or you could do the whole lesson in one day. Captain prefers this option so we rotate geography with science so he only does one of these subjects on any given day. The program is designed for K-4th grade. Since Captain is at the older age level he can go through the material a little quicker which is why he prefers to do all of the activities in one day. The only time we work on something for more than one day is if we don't have time to complete the project. Captain loves how he can just click on a link and go straight to a video or a

Chara Games - Unauthorized {TOS REVIEWS}

Image
We have been playing a new game called Unauthorized by Chara Games . It's made for 6-12 players but we played it with 5 (one person actually had 2 sets of cards). The game play was a little confusing at first but with a little practice it became easier. There is a really good You Tube video that helps! I watched this video quite a few times! The games comes in a little cardboard box similar to any card game. It comes with a rule book, 12 role cards - there are 12 so you can use as many of them as you need. There are 2 different kinds of reference cards. One for the dealer and two for the players to share. This helps the dealer and players know what they do on their turn. There are also experience cards, you use different numbers of these depending on how many players you have. The set up of the game varies depending on how many players you have. You need enough role cards - one for each player. Since we played with 5 players and we needed 6 we set up the game

Field Trip - Neon Lights

Image
 Last week we went to see a museum exhibit about Neon lights. They lights were very interesting. Of course you don't see many neon lights in action anymore. Hubs remembered that there was a Mcdonalds that still had it's original neon sign. We decided to stay out a little later and drive there. Captain thought it was really cool. Although we all know there are a lot more than 100 million burgers sold! Such a fun night plus we shared some hot fries!!! Goodreads Review The Siren Chronicles Book 1

Image
The Siren Chronicles, Book 1 by Douglas J. Sloan My rating: 5 of 5 stars I really loved this book. I wasn't sure at first but it only took a couple of pages to have me hooked. I love that I didn't have to worry about content. No swearing or sex and not a full of trash. The story has some excellent twists and definitely has me waiting for the 2nd in the series. The characters we built well and it feels as if you really know them by the end of this first book. It's a book I wouldn't mind my teenage daughter reading. It would even make an excellent movie! I can't wait to see where the next book leads! Random Friday

Last weekend we went to our local wildlife center. They were running a class on Monarch butterflies. The kids loved it and we got to see a monarch butterfly up close. We learned all about tagging monarchs and how they look for the tags in Mexico It was a really interesting event. Captain really loved it. Jam even is interested in doing a project next spring. We are going to raise some, tag them and then see if they make it all the way to Mexico.
