Heirloom Audio Productions - In the Reign of Terror {TOS REVIEW}

We love audio books. Dramatized ones are our absolute favorite. We have reviewed a ton of these audio dramas by Heirloom Audio Productions. Although I hate to say it - since we have loved them all I really think In the Reign of Terror would be voted our favorite so far!

When this arrived in the mail we were already planning a ten hour journey. So the kids sat looking at it on the kitchen side for about a week. Every time someone walked past it, they would pick it up and read the back cover. Then they would tell me about it... "The guy in the story is 16 you know", "Harry goes to live in France", "What's a guillotine?" (Boo and Jam wanted to make sure you knew that was Captain!). Then Boo started to ask questions about the time period. All in all by the time we put the CD in the car and pressed play as we pulled out of the driveway the kids were super excited.

The story is about 16 year old Harry who sets of on an adventure to France. He lives with a French noble family and eventually gains the friendship and love of them all (I won't give you the details of how this happens as it will give you too much of the story.) The time period of this story is the French Revolution. We haven't studied this time period a lot, so the Captain was surprised with some of the things that happened. This isn't a particularly happy story, but it's full of history and drama. The French Revolution was not a happy time period for anyone. Nobles were killed - whole families - this is not a story that the only victims are adults fighting for their country. In this story men, women and children are killed by various means, just because of their lineage. Whole families were destroyed. Killed by the guillotine, murdered because they were born into certain families.

There are comparisons made through out the story of the French Revolution and the American Revolution. The contrasts made are very interesting and I agree with their view point. Although the French Revolution is called the same 'a revolution' is more of a mob uprising. Killing mercilessly the old and the young. It wasn't a battle fought between armies.

So much happens in this story and Boo has a new desire to read a very famous book about the same time period (I love it when that happens!)

Besides receiving the CD we also received a link to the downloadable study guide. It talks about the time period, vocabulary used and so many interesting things to turn this into a full blown study. Plus the website is chock full of so much information it's incredible. I always love checking out the links. One of the things I love is the Live The Adventure Club website. I love these CDs the kids have already told the hubby we are going to listen to it on our next trip together (Hubs wasn't on our last one) and he's excited too. Although he seems to always listen to them after we have, the kids never mind! I also like that they introduce so much history, and the kids don't even realize they are learning!
