ARTistic Pursuits Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray - Art of the Ancients {TOS REVIEW}
We have used books from ARTistic Pursuits Inc. before and Captain really wanted to try the new ARTistic Pursuits Art Instruction Books with DVD and Blu-Ray - Art of the Ancients course even though he's really at the top of the age range.
This new course looks quite different from their other books. They were all softbound and had a ring bound edge. These are hardback thinner books with a DVD and Blu-Ray stored behind the front cover.
Captain decided on book two as we had the older version book one. Book two of this new series focuses on ancient art. There are two ways you can work through the series of art books. You can start with volume one and work in chronological order two through eight or start with volume one and skip around any volume focusing on the historical period you want to study.
There are some materials needed for some of the projects. There are kits you can buy for this book from various retailers. Or like me, you can visit your local craft store with a 40% coupon in hand every time you need more supplies!
There are eighteen lessons in this volume with six of them having a DVD lesson to go along with it.
Lesson 1 - Video #1 Soft Pastels
Lesson 2 - Art in Caves
Lesson 3 - Video #2 Clay : Slab Building
Lesson 4 - Art Underground
Lesson 5 - Art in Minoan Palaces
Lesson 6 - Art in Pyramids
Lesson 7 - Art in Egyptian Palaces
Lesson 8 - Art on City Walls
Lesson 9 - Art on Temples
Lesson 10 - Video #3 Clay: Pinch Method
Lesson 11 - Video #4 Clay: Pinch Pot
Lesson 12 - Art in Tombs
Lesson 13 - Video #5: Animal Figure Roman Sculpture
Lesson 14 - Art on Roadsides
Lesson 15 - Art on Mummies
Lesson 16 - Video #6 Paper Mosaic
Lesson 17 - Art Preserved in Ash
Lesson 18 - Art in Catacombs
Each lesson is very self-explanatory. Before each lesson, there is a section containing prep notes for the next one. This really helps me as I didn't buy the kit. The kit is definitely the way to go if you don't have a craft store on had.
Captain really loves this program. He has enjoyed making some of the projects and we still have a few to go.
To complete the art projects in this book you will need the following art supplies;
Hard or Soft Pastels set
5lb gray self-hardening clay
wire clay cutter (I bought a full set of tools)
watercolor crayons
oil pastels
Ebony pencil
Vinyl eraser
Watercolor brush #8 round
Watercolor paper pad
Drawing paper pad
Construction paper pad
Scissors
Elmer's Glue-All
Glue Stick
There are also some household items needed;
Paper towels
Water container
Hairspray (aerosol)
Roll of brown packing paper
Rolling pin or dowel
Four-inch paper tube
Plastic knife
Crayola sidewalk chalk (optional)
24-inch square canvas cloth
Masking tape
Six paint stir sticks or two wood slats 3/8" thick
Captain loves using chalk pastels. It's something that he has seen his older siblings do. I don't always let him use them for random projects. So when a project actually requires them he gets super excited. Which is probaly why the projects he wants to share are all chalk pastel ones. Great tip - mentioned in the book. Spray the finished chalk pastel picture with hairspray to 'set' it and stop it from rubbing off on everything!
