Apologia - Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology {TOS REVIEW}
Captain loves science. In fact, if he could study animals, and science all day and skip math he would be a very happy boy! Captain has used the Apologia's Young Explorers Series before and was super excited to be able to review Exploring Creation with Anatomy & Physiology.

The suggested schedule for this book is to be worked on twice a week to complete one lesson every two weeks . The schedule is found at the front of the notebook. However, there isn't a schedule as such in the textbook but it does mention that most lessons can be divided into a two-week schedule but it's not broken down for you. The notebook schedule specifies what pages to read, experiments to complete and work to complete in the note-booking journal.
One of the reasons we like the flow of these lessons is that it recommends narration. The students are encouraged to narrate at the end of each study time. I am a firm believer in narration and how it helps retention of the information learned. A lot of our narration is done with Captain not even realizing he's doing it! He loves to tell his dad or sibling what he's learned that day.
Captain prefers to use the older note-booking journal. It is a little harder and contains more work. There are crossword puzzles and extra note-booking pages to complete. The junior notebook journal contains more coloring pages. Captain likes to do one or two of these but decided that he prefers the crosswords and other pages more than the coloring ones. The quality of the books is the same though. There is just less writing in the junior journal.
Lesson one introduces the child to Human Anatomy and Physiology. There are new words defined and the history Human Anatomy and Physiology from the Egyptians, Hebrews, and the Greeks. Captain enjoyed working on the personality tests using the four humors to describe different types of people.
Phlegmatic - Easy going and easy to get along with
Sanguine - Excited full of energy, usually happy
Choleric - Controlling, Leader, liked to be in charge
Melancholy - Thoughtful, artistic, emotional
We also mummified an apple!
Lesson one also focuses on cells and how they are made up and what their role is.
Lesson two is all about the Skeletal System! This has been Captain's favorite chapter so far. There is a fun experiment about trying to make a human from a lump of clay! Captain thought it was super fun to try and get it to stand up. We had previously made a wire body covered in paper mache and so he understood why we need something strong as a frame to hold our body up! We read through the chapter and completed the note-booking exercises. Captain loved labeling the bones of the body. He found the name "humerous" very funny (pun intended).
Lesson Three
This lesson focuses on the muscular system. We worked on this chapter just before going to one of those fun trampoline parks. Captain thought it was fun to think how his muscles worked while jumping. He also found it funny to ask people if they knew what their biggest muscle was apparently saying "gluteus maximus" is funny when you are a boy! He also enjoyed learning about the muscles that control his eyes and rapid eye movement. One of the experiments in the book is related to muscles. holding out your arms to work the triceps brachii muscle. He wants to work out all of the muscles he uses when he swims. He has noticed how he feels stronger gradually over time and how sometimes his muscles hurt when he does a lot of sports after a break.
Lesson Four
We have just started working on this section so I don't have a lot of fun information yet. Captain is just loving all of the information in this book so far. I think it's easy to enjoy something that is so easy to relate to. When you learn about things that are happening to your body every day it makes it easier to understand why we need to make healthy choices.
The Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology MP3 Audiobook is great for studying on the go or when you are just tired of reading! When I put it in the disk drive of Captain's laptop it shows there are 415 files on the disc. However, if you look for the AemMp3.cdd button you will find a little MP3 picture pop up in the middle of your screen. When you click play you first hear music and then some instructions on how to use the audio cd. I wouldn't suggest using the audiobook without the actual textbook as whenever you get to a "TRY THIS" section the narrator just says "You can now do the Try This experiment on page 21" If you are listening at home it would be easy to pause and do the experiment. However, if you are using this disc in the car you would have to go back and look it up in the book. Captain prefers me to read to him...he loves being curled up on the sofa - what can I say. However, I think this is a great idea to give your voice a rest or enable a beginning reader to be more independent - it's definitely not a replacement for the book though.
We have been really enjoying this course and will definitely keep going! Captain has been learning so much and loves the notebook - crafty without too much wasted time! He is not as keen on the audio disc, but I am going to keep it handy for the next time we have to go on a road trip! It definitely would make car schooling easier!
