Where The Red Fern Grows
Jam just finished reading 'Where The Red Fern Grows' today.
It was one of the books on his Amblesideonline.org free read list.
This morning he was about 5 pages from the end when he came upstairs shouting "Why did YOU make me read this! I am not reading any more"
He said that he knew the ending and so didn't need to read anymore of it. I quietly convinced him to finish the book. When done he said "OK, I did it are you happy now. Why did I have to read it any way."
We talked about the lessons Billy learned in the book. Responsibility, patience, endurance, and love. There are lots of others but these are the ones we discussed.
He was still not convinced as to WHY he had to read such a sad book although I think it will be one of those books that he will refer to and think about as he grows up. Today he was just sad so he needed cheering up.
SO I went back to the library and checked out the book that the librarian had jokingly pointed out to be me when we borrowed "Where The Red Fern Grows".
I don't know if he will like it and it is probably twaddle, but it brought a smile to his face today.
