I love to read, and historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. I was recently sent a copy of Carolina Gold to read from Lifuse Publicity Books and I can tell you straight away it did not disappoint.

This was the first time I had read a book written by Dorothy Love and I really enjoyed her writing style.

My Opinion

Carolina Gold is a very pleasant read. It is full of interesting living history and based upon the life of Elizabeth Waties Allston Pringle who lived from 1845-1921. I love reading books that open up periods of time and experiences that I have never known. I was intrigued by the information about the rice plantation, about moving to the sea in the summer months to avoid the fever, and the huge epidemics that hit New Orleans and how the sick were people were treated and cared for.

To make ends meet Charlotte starts tutoring, as a homeschool mom I love the theories and methods she uses to teach her pupils. It made me think of Charlotte Mason a British educator from the turn of the twentieth century. I love the idea of living by a beach and teaching my children the amazing plant and animal life that are found there.  we can learn many lessons if we can apply her trials into our lives.

I loved that this story had a background romance. It didn't overtake the historical aspect but blended perfectly. This is a book that I will happily share with my daughter.

About the Author 

A former journalist, free-lance writer and college professor, Dorothy Love explores the intersection of history and human relationships to create novels that speak to the hearts of women everywhere. She is the author of the acclaimed Hickory Ridge novels set in her native state of Tennessee.

After earning a masters degree and Ph.D, she authored dozens of magazine articles before breaking into book publishing with a number of award-winning novels for preteens and young adults. The Hickory Ridge series marked her adult fiction debut. Currently she is working on several stand-alone historical novels set in the South.

When she isn't busy writing or researching her next book, Love enjoys hiking, traveling, and hanging out with her husband Ron and their rambunctious golden retriever. The Loves make their home in the Texas hill country.
