Julie Klassen’s “The Dancing Master” Review and Giveaway reminder!
About the Book-
Finding himself the man of the family, London dancing
master Alec Valcourt moves his mother and sister to remote Devonshire,
hoping to start over. But he is stunned to learn the village matriarch
has prohibited all dancing, for reasons buried deep in her past.
Alec finds an unlikely ally in the matriarch’s daughter. Though he’s initially wary of Julia Midwinter’s reckless flirtation, he comes to realize her bold exterior disguises a vulnerable soul–and hidden sorrows of her own.
Julia is quickly attracted to the handsome dancing master–a man her mother would never approve of–but she cannot imagine why Mr. Valcourt would leave London, or why he evades questions about his past. With Alec’s help, can Julia uncover old secrets and restore life to her somber village…and to her mother’s tattered heart?
Filled with mystery and romance, The Dancing Master brings to life the intriguing profession of those who taught essential social graces for ladies and gentlemen hoping to make a “good match” in Regency England.

My Opinion-
I loved this book. It felt like a traditional or old fashioned version on 'footloose'. When I first started to read the book and the story started that's all I could think about...this book reminds me of 'Footloose'. However as I got into the story I started to fall in love with some the characters - however, not necessarily the main ones. The story is not as simple as it seems when you start reading. There are some good twists in the story. I have never read a book written by Julie Klassen before and I was pleasantly surprised. I was intrigued because it was mentioned that she writes in the style of Jane Austen, which she pulled off quite well. As I am originally from England and a huge Jane Austin fan that's a big complement.
I didn't particularly like 'Julia' but some of the other characters were wonderful. The only thing that bothers me is, that although 'Julia' was a spoiled, conceited girl she seemed to win in the end. I know the book talks about grace and forgiveness but I didn't really see much of a change in Julia's personality and that made me sad. I felt that her friend would have made a more deserving heroine.
All in all it was a fun read, not overly religious, and a very 'clean' romance. I love reading books that I wouldn't mind my daughter reading. My 11 year old already has her eyes on this one.
