Standard Deviants Accelerate - SDA {TOS Review}

Standard Deviants Accelerate Review

Jam and I have been using Standard Deviants Accelerate. We love being able to use online resources in our homeschool and so It was great being able to try out this program. We were given access to all of their Home-school Courses courses for the period of one year. The courses available are for grades 3-12 and cover a huge variety of subjects. Each subject has enough material for a year's worth of supplemental study.
The courses that we received access to are;
  • Arithmetic (Grades 3+)
  • Fundamental Math (Grades 4+)
  • Earth Science (Grades 6+)
  • Nutrition (Grades 6+)
  • Biology (Grades 7+)
  • Algebra (Grades 7+)
  • Chemistry (Grades 9+)
  • English Comp (Grades 9+)
  • U. S. History (grades 9+)
  • AP Biology (grades 11+)
  • AP Chemistry (grades 11+)
  • AP U. S. Gov. & Politics (grades 11+)
  • AP Eng. Composition (grades 11+)
Jam was especially interested in U.S. History and Chemistry so that is what we focused on. It's really practical to use as he could access the courses on his laptop or pad.

The videos are fun and the material is presented by teenagers and is very engaging. Jam has commented often how much he likes the way the material is presented.

As you can see from the list above the courses are mainly for grade 6 and above with the exception of arithmetic and fundamental math. Captain wanted to get in on the action so I did let him use the Arithmetic course a few times. He is working above grade level but it was a little above his level.

The U.S. History course that Jam liked covers;

  • American Presidents
  • Women's Movement
  • Civil Reform
  • America at War
  • Civil Reform

What we did;

Jam is very independent with his school work. This course was no different. When he started the U.S. History course he commented how easy it is to navigate. He clicked on the first topic being covered which was American Presidents and then clicked on the first sub-topic. Which of course would be George Washington.

After clicking on the sub-topic you come to the screen you can see above. The first thing Jam did was to watch the video. The you can click on the vocab to review all of the vocabulary in the video that the student may not understand.

The next button is the Diagram tab. This is a puzzle style quiz related to the information taught in the video. You move the answers into place until they all 'click' and stick in place. This indicates you have completed it correctly. Every try of this is worth points towards you end grade.

Next we have the Quiz tab. There are approximately five questions here. Once the student submits their answers the quiz will come back graded. If a student gets an incorrect answer their is a video they can watch showing the correct one.

Written Answers tab - here the student will see some writing prompt titles to complete a written essay. It would be good if this could be completed for extra credit or submitted in some way. After completely this last tab's resources there is a button to click that sends you to the next topic in the section and the process begins again.

In the teacher's account it's really easy to see the average % of each student and class they they are taking, this makes grade keeping really simple.
