Elder David A. Bednar - One by One

I was recently sent a copy of Elder David A. Bednar's book One by One.

When this book arrived I was going through a few things and it actually sat by my computer for a few days. This last Sunday we had a lesson in Relief Society about the Holy Ghost. I don't know if it's related but for some reason today, I found the time to pick up his book and read it cover to cover. It was just what I needed and actually spoke to my heart today. So although I was sent this book to review, it actually touched my heart in a way today that I wanted to share with you. I don't think it was a coincidence that I picked up the book today. In fact it reaffirms the whole point that Elder Bednar is making. That Heavenly Father knows us as individuals and that he loves us individually.

Elder Bednar shares many experiences to express the truth that we are important to Heavenly Father as individuals. He knows us and he knows our needs. I was reminded of a tender mercy through reading this book that actually touched my heart again this week. Towards the end of the book Elder Bednar tells about a situation that happened to him while he was serving as a Stake President. He had the prompting to leave a Stake Priesthood training meeting just as it was about to start and take an Elder's Quorum President with him. Where did they go that was so important to skip of of the meeting you might ask - their son's championship basketball game. Their son's were on opposing teams that night. They had a great time, and made their families very happy to see them and share in the excitement. 6 months later Elder Bednar was called by that same Elder's Quorum President on the day his son died in a tragic accident. He mentioned how much being able to watch that basketball meant to him now, and of course always. Elder Bednar went on to mention how he feels it wasn't by accident that he made that decision to attend that game, but a tender mercy and blessing from an ever loving Heavenly Father.

At church last Sunday I mentioned that I have always had an ability to hear and act upon the promptings of the Holy Ghost. I have on many occasions received promptings that have kept myself and others safe from danger. I have also had promptings I have acted on without ever knowing why. So I continued to say that I sometimes wonder that I never received a prompting to enable me to save my oldest daughter from the accident that took her from us, and returned her to Heavenly Father. It's something that has nagged my heart over the years. However reading the story about Elder Bednar and the basketball game reminded me of a tender mercy that Heavenly Father gave to my husband and I with our daughter. A few months before our daughter's accident we were visiting my husband's mother in Boston. She had flown from England to stay with her sister. We spent a wonderful time together, and after a few days decided to head back home. We were going to take a trip to Washington DC and New York. However, while sat at traffic lights in Boston with rain pouring down, I turned to my husband and asked how long it would take us to drive to Walt Disney World. He looked at me as if I was crazy, but then said two days. We didn't even need to discuss it, but turned around to our then three year old and said "If you can sit in the car and be good for two days, we can see Micky Mouse" she looked at us and just said "Deal!!!" The next week was full of adventure and everything Disney. At the time it seemed like a crazy spur of the moment thing. We had no summer clothes (we had packed for the east coast) and had to buy a couple of outfits for each of us. We had a great time and made a lot of wonderful memories. Little did we know it would be a once in a lifetime experience for us with her, she passed away 6 months later.

This book helped me remember that tender mercy. So although I didn't receive a prompting to save her from danger, I received a different prompting that day, in Boston, in the rain that gave us a beautiful tender mercy. Just as Elder Bednar said in this book - because the worth of souls in great in the sight of God. In the work of the Lord their is no such thing as a coincidence.
