YWAM Publishing - Heroes of History - Theodore Roosevelt {TOS REVIEW}

YWAM Publishing
We were fortunate to be able to review one of the awesome Heroes of History books from YWAM Publishing. Captain took ages which one was going to be his first choice and everyone here was really excited for him to choose Theodore Roosevelt - An American Original.

All of my kids have loved learning about 'Teddy Roosevelt' and so I know this book will be read by all three of the kids.

The Heroes of History collection from YWAM Publishing is by far one of our favorite educational book series. They are written in a narrative style and chronicle remarkable true stories of amazing men and women. There are twenty-nine books in the whole series and it's Captains goal to read and own each one. They start with Christopher Columbus 1451-1506 and end with Ben Carson 1951. This list shows the books listed in chronological order and would be an excellent way to read them so the child basically reads their way through history using these biographies. I'm sure you can see it now...all these books lined up on your bookcase!

The life of Theodore Roosevelt is one of determination. If your kids need a role model this guy is definitely one to look at. As a child, he suffered from asthma and a weak heart. However, he persevered and went on to do amazing things.

Captains favorite story of Theodore Roosevelt was about when he was a child he has such bad asthma that he has to sleep upright. His family kept moving and visiting different places to try and find a place that he could breathe better. They would live in a new place until his asthma got bad again and then try somewhere new. Captain thought it would be fun to keep seeing new places...but not to have asthma.

Jam's favorite story of Theodore Roosevelt is about how he ended up a lieutenant colonel in the First Volunteer Cavalry this was just what he wanted as he wanted to go to war himself. To do this he resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. This calvary consisted of lots of different kinds of men, from cowboys, eastern educated volunteers, and Reservation Indians. The totals were 760 cowboys, 20 Indians, and 120 university students and graduates. I'm not going to tell you all of the story but it is quite inspiring.

Boo likes the way that 'Teddy Bears' are named after him.

There are so many other stories I could go on and on. However, I'm going to skip from the biography to the Study Guide we received as a download. The downloadable guide comes in different formats, homeschool, small groups, and classroom. The unit study guide is broken down into two parts. The first part explains some ways to use the guide. Since it is a unit study there are ways to incorporate almost every part of schooling into the study of this book.

History • Geography • Essay writing • Creative writing • Reading comprehension • Public speaking
• Drama • Art

There are six key quotes included in the unit study. My favorite is -

“When at some future date the high court of history sits in judgment on each of us…in whatever office we hold, we will be measured by the answers to four questions: First, were we truly men of courage.… Second, were we truly men of judgment.… Third, were we truly men of integrity.… Finally, were we truly men of dedication?” —John F. Kennedy

There are six discussion questions for each chapter. One vocabulary based, a factual question based on the chapter, two questions to gauge the student's comprehension of the chapter, and finally two open-ended questions to encourage discussion. The first three questions are designed for easier kids and they get a little harder as you get to the end. They are adaptable so you could use all of them or just one.

One thing I love about the study guides that go along with these books is that the material can be adapted to a variety of ages. You can discuss using the simple questions or assign an essay or creative writing project to older students. It's full of so much information!

The next book on our wish list is Christopher Columbus mainly because it's the first in chronological order and I may as well start our collection at the beginning. I do have four or five others that I have already crossed of my master list. I can't wait till I get all of these on my bookshelves. I know will end up reading them all myself!. Did you know they come in audio format as well!
