The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

I have just spent the last couple of evenings reading The Old Schoolhouse Magazine - November Issue.

The The Old Schoolhouse Magazine is a free monthly publication written for Homeschool families.
I feel I am a novice when it comes to homeschooling. Jam had finished fourth grade and Boo second before we made the jump. So after only one and a half years I still love to glean information from others I consider 'experts' in my chosen field - to be a homeschooling parent.

When I clicked on the link for the magazine I was impressed to see a menu bar down the left hand side of my screen. It was an easy way to skim the titles of the articles and find those that caught my attention from the front cover.

There are so many excellent articles in the November issue that I can't comment on them all. However I will mention those that I found the most relevant to me.

Lately we have been working on adding more poetry to our day. Jam and Boo are both reading works of assigned poets and then once a week they copy out their favorite one in their poetry book. I was delighted to see a few articles related to the importance of poetry in education. The article Pursuing Poetry added an insight of a veteran home-school parent she has some excellent ideas of how we can give our youngest child a love of poetry.

I love the Amish - I always have. I have read so many novels I feel that I know a little about there way of life. It was interesting to read the 'A Day in the life of  a Young Amish Mother' article on page 114. I think we are all interested in how other people live, and how they do things.

I feel a lot of the articles in the magazine are written for the enrichment of parents. However some of the articles would be of interest to children. I know Boo is very interested in the Amish and would enjoy reading about their lives. There is also a very handy section on page 110 to help you use the information to complete mapping activities and handy questions for various ages.

Another bonus that I found is that this magazine is available as an app that you can download on to your phone or ipad for Android and Apple. I did this straight away as I normally have more time to read when I am away from my computer! However like most my phone is ALWAYS with me. Here is the link www.tosapps.com/. I have already downloaded the app and I will be keeping

The only negative thing I have to say about the magazine is the number of advertisements. However saying that there is just as many advertisements in a magazine that you have to pay for...so considering it's a free magazine I can live with them.

Remember the magazine and app are free, so go check them out.
