'Honor' a Novel Lyn Cote {Tyndale Blog Network Review}

 

Honor Penworthy grew up in the south. Her family are rich slave owners. However when her beliefs put her at odds with her Grandfather. She ends up having to leave the plantation and the slaves she was hoping to free behind. Fortunately she was able to free her long term companion Royale and they traveled together to Pittsburgh to stay with an elderly relative. However when they get there things continue to look bleak. Honor ends up in a arranged marriage of convenience, moves west, deals with kidnapping by slave traders, gets secretly involved in the underground railway, learns sign language and struggles to keep everything together.

I loved this book. It took me about 24 hours to read. It was an interesting view of  life before the civil war. It is a story about courage. Honor shows amazing courage by standing up for her principles no matter what it costs her. Samuel (Honor's love interest) is deaf and shows courage to continue to live and provide for a family in a world that does not accept people with disabilities as equals. Then of course there is Royale, Honor's freed slave who has to be brave living in a world where men are trying to kidnap and sell her to the highest bidder. Of course there are other characters that show courage in many ways too, and others that don't. 

This is the first book in the Quaker Brides series, and I am really looking forward to the others. It's nice to read and feel like you are learning a bit about history at the same time.

Definitely worth reading.
